Coming Undone

Having studied the Chinese cultural revolution and the globalisation of China, I decided to explore and experiment with this concept, drawing inspiration from the book 'Wild Swans' by Jung Chang, which recounts the lives of three generations of women in China. I began through portraying the potential loss, or deterioration, of tradition and culture in China as a result of the revolution, which regarded traditional dress as bourgeois and unpatriotic, as well as the modern globalisation in society there.
This led me to experiment with deteriorating, unravelling and deconstructing fabrics and garments, in addition to reconstructing and utilising the outcome of the deconstructions, in particular denim, to create new, modern garments that still, however, hold traces of their original and true state.
